During the Academic Year 2016-2017 a pilot of the Welcome Project
has been carried out in the London Borough of Newham thanks to the support of Newham Educational Psychology Service (NEPS).
The London Borough of Newham has the youngest overall population and has been identified as the most ethnically diverse district in England and Wales.
Who has been involved?
39 different languages
43 different backgrounds
4 Schools – Essex Primary, Nelson Primary, Dersingham Primary, Royal Docks Community School
the whole NEPS team: 10+ Educational Psychologists have been involved in the development of the project, facilitating direct contact with the schools interested to take part in the pilot.
The levels of differences among participants observed in the pilot highlighted the importance of raising awareness
about diversity and inclusion within the local community through a range of services and initiatives.
How has the pilot been carried out?
Qualitative and quantitative activities in the form of an original questionnaire administered by the class teacher.
School members of staff were trained by an Educational Psychologist about how to complete the activities.
